Depression and Anxiety
Depression and anxiety affect large proportions of people at one time or the other. Both problems are characterised by an excessively negative interpretation of events. When thinking about social interactions or their performance at work, for instance, a person might focus only on the things that went wrong or might go wrong in the future. They might dismiss evidence of their own good qualities, and miss opportunities to improve their lives in concrete ways.
My approach in working with these issues is to help the client gain perspective on their own thought processes and gently help them adopt a more balanced approach. This means acknowledging the opportunities, successes and connections that exist in everyone’s life, alongside the inevitable failures and disappointments. The goal is that clients regain their sense of agency and can make positive changes, which in turns helps them regain confidence and optimism.
